Traces

Traces is the second solo exhibition of the Dutch artist Joep van Liefland (*1966) at Galerie Gebr. Lehmann Berlin.
The exhibition presents new works , silkcreens on canvas , cabinets with videos and video cases and also bronze sculptures.

Joep van Liefland deals with the medium of video.
In times of on-going digitalisation of the media and the extinction of old information carriers, the current exhibition shows a large number of those “traces“ of medial ghosts. Free from nostalgia the artist is working with the haptic present of videotapes that are not representing a film but are put into the artistic focus as an object. Locked in cabinets behind glass or stacked and cast in bronze, the fugacity of the videotape is antagonised and hence consolidated as a memorial in the course of time–similar to a memorial as a trace of history.

Traces ist die zweite Einzelausstellung des niederländischen Künstlers Joep van Liefland (*1966) in der Berliner Galerie Gebr. Lehmann.
Gezeigt werden neue Arbeiten, Siebdrucke auf Leinwand, Vitrinen mit Videokassetten und -hüllen sowie Bronzeskulpturen.

In den Zeiten der voranschreitenden Digitalisierung der Medien und dem Aussterben veralteter Informationsträger finden sich in der aktuellen Ausstellung eine Vielzahl von "Spuren" dieser medialen Geister. Frei von jeglicher Nostalgie arbeitet der Künstler mit der haptischen Präsenz von Videokassetten, die nicht mehr für den Film stehen, sondern als Objekt in das künstlerische Interesse gerückt werden. In Vitrinen hinter Glas verschlossen oder aufgetürmt und in Bronze gegossen wird ihrer Vergänglichkeit entgegengewirkt. Sie werden somit zu Erinnerungsobjekten im Fluss der Zeit verfestigt - gleich einem Denkmal als Spur der Geschichte.

"Traces wird zu einem Prozess, der aus Wiedererkennung und Verlust besteht, dessen Wurzeln im Minimalismus wohnen. Der Zuschauer wird direkt mit den Objekten konfrontiert, die nicht nur die Spuren des Künstlers enthalten, sondern auch die verblassende Wärme des vorherigen Nutzers."
